Do you enjoy a leader you follow?
We all have leaders, they just have different names: boss, manager, supervisor, shift leader, mom, dad, minister, pastor, reverend, old brother, older sister and it could go on even more.
Most of us have multiple leaders at one time.
One job I worked at had at least five bosses at one time.
I have had some really great bosses over the years.
Bosses that were: compassionate, funny, a joy to be around and caring to name a few of their traits.
There were some really great people.
At the same time I have had some really lousy bosses.
Supervisors that were: Liars, backstabbers, just looked to please their bosses, unloyal, mean, angry, two-faced.
What about you?
It didn't matter the job that a good boss gave me, if I didn't like it but they asked me to do it in a respectful way I would do it.
With a bad boss, I would hate to do the easiest task.
I would feel miserable doing that task and would try to avoid that person.
I wish I could say that the Church was a different area.
Often this is the worst.
Because everyone is Christian, we are supposed to get along right?
WRONG.
Often ministers and Church leaders can be the worst.
They like things done their way and if you do it a different way they blow up.
I have seen or heard about Church leaders that were liars, cursed around the Church, blew up at people, stole other peoples work without giving them credit for it, the list can go on and on.
Even godly men can screw up.
I am no exception nor is anyone.
Chapter 10 of Zechariah verse 3…
"My anger burns against the
Shepherds,
And I will punish the leaders;
For the Lord Almighty will care
For his flock, the house of Judah,
And make them like a proud horse
In battle."
Who cares for the people?
The Lord, often this is easy to forget.
Ministers often feel like everything has to go or run through them in order for the Church to succeed.
This couldn't be further from the truth.
Minister or priest break down to the root word servant.
Could you imagine if we changed the name of Priest, minister, reverend, pastor to servant?
Senior servant or youth servant?
How would that change the way things are?
Christ modeled (I am supposed to follow this model) servant leadership.
You led while being a servant, we struggle at this.
We get wrapped into this idea that this is: My congregation, my flock, my ministry to name a few.
We even have books called "They Smell Like Sheep," (Awful title but good information).
Biblically, there are enough scripture references to this, but I think we take this out of context.
I hate calling things my.
My Church, My youth, My staff….my my my my my.
God brings up it's not yours but mine.
How would Church leadership change if we looked at the fact we were servants first?
If you're at work you don't have to look at the fact your boss is in charge of you but other people in are over that person?
Would your view change of them.
I love the fact the place I serve at now is an elder led Church rather than a minister led Church.
Churches might have the title, but the actions don't represent the view.
Our senior minister is great to work with and I love the fact it feels more like a team rather than a dictatorship.
God ultimately is in charge of the Church not us.
We are not responsible for the Church to grow, to improve and to change, God is.
While we might do his work, we are just really his tool.
I have no problem with that, I just hope I am not to broken where he can't work through me.
God can work through all of us, we are ALL just servants.
What do you think?
Have a great day.
