How can starving yourself be a good spiritual practice?
Fasting is one spiritual practice I am still learning.
I don't necessarily understand the practice of it.
I remember mentioning to a teacher in class how I rarely do this and I don't really understand the practice of fasting.
The answer I got was basically well that's something you should work on.
I have done the 30 hour famine and while I think it's a good program I don't think that's what Jesus wanted when it came to fasting.
After about 24 hours of eating I get extremely irritated quickly. A little thing can set me off.
Hailee knows this personally, I am a different person when I don't eat.
God's working on me in this area, but I have trouble leading a 30 hour famine when after 24 hours I am leading an event and get frustrated.
I think it's an awesome program, at the same time its not the spiritual discipline I think he wanted us to have, to fast to raise money for world hunger.
Matthew 6 verse 18 talks about fasting…
"so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your father, who is unseen; and your father who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."
This is the third section in a row when Jesus is talking about doing things in private and not for show.
I have tried fasting more but still am gaining the idea of what fasting is.
From my limited experience I take fasting as a time when I spend a day devoted to God. That I spend the day growing closer to him and his will for my life. I spend extra time in prayer and spend more time trying to listen to what God entails for my life rather than stay busy.
I try to keep in peace.
The last couple of times I have fasted I tried to make sure that nobody else knew and I was doing this to grow deeper spiritually.
I am trying to get a better grasp on what it means to fast, but I do not get the full concept yet.
What about you?
Have you ever fasted before?
What do you think the purpose of fasting is for?
I never have all the answers and am always looking for new perspective.
Have a great day.
