I have never really seen the new Willy Wonka movie, but I still remember the old one.
A movie about kids that get to go to a candy store, it was sweet.
The movie always made me hungry for candy.
From the chocolate river to the room that almost everything was edible, it was great.
The kids that won the right to go to the factory came from different backgrounds, whether rich, poor, bigger or smaller.
As they went through the factory they showed their true character and paid the price for their actions.
One of the girls I remember singing a song that included, "I want it now!"
She ended the song on the egg platform, it said she was a bad egg and sent her down the bad egg side.
For the most part, I don't think any kid grows up evil.
But they form into the people they are going to be from what they go through.
Just because you go through something bad doesn't mean your life with be bad.
If that was the case, I would be an abuser of all kinds, divorced and remarried to name a few.
The beautiful thing about the life given to us, we have a choice.
We have a choice what we want to do and where we want to head.
In a way, we choose what we want to become.
Jesus gives a parable about some seed.
How it lands on different grounds, some flourish, others don't.
Matthew 13:22…
"The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful."
A man through seed into thorns, it grew up but not in a good way.
It got trapped by things around it. Just like we do.
Wrapped into having more stuff, more money and the result it doesn't produce anything good.
It's easy to fall into this trap.
I want it!
I fall into this trap.
We get into the idea that a want is more of a need.
I want a new elliptical machine to workout with.
I want a Playstation 3 because it's graphics and games look amazing.
I want a new home computer because the one we have is slow.
I want to go to a Cubs game at Wrigley.
Do I need any of these things? No.
But it would be easy to get wrapped into these things as needs.
I need this in order to survive.
Really?
Well, no.
We get wrapped around thorns that are around us and eventually will choke us.
The more money we have the bigger the payment we can afford right?
So we might have nicer things but we pay the price for them.
Jesus is saying watch out with going for wealth and for worrying about life.
Trust in him and he will show you things to value in this life.
Jesus shows us a way of life that not many people can life.
Even those who follow him (including myself) get wrapped into the wrong ideas.
What do you think?
What type of an egg are you turning out to be?
Are you wrapped in thorns?
Have a great day.
