Does appearance matter?

One of the ugliest players in the NBA is Chris Kaman according to a poll done a couple of years ago.

Kaman is one of the few reasons I pay attention to NBA basketball.

I could really care less about the local Detroit team and pay attention to the brutal Clippers and there center.

Why do I like Kaman?

1.      He went to Central Michigan and I got to cover him working for CMU sports information and the Morning Sun newspaper.
2.      He led them to the tourney and was the sixth pick in the NBA draft.
3.      People thought he was going to be a complete bust because he dominated the MAC and not a real conference (He’s an underdog).
4.      He proved people wrong and has had a good career with an All-Star appearance.

I like Kaman, yet some people looked down on his looks.

The 7-1 center was 7 foot 190ish pounds in high school and didn’t really gain weight till his sophomore season in college.

He at one point had really long hair that he just slicked to the back of his head.

A couple of years ago he was voted the second ugliest player in the NBA.

Not something most people want to be known for.

Looking ugly.

In pro sports this is overlooked but imagine what if we did this with every job?

This would be crazy.

There was a sociology study done in which two girls were stranded at the side of the road, one purposively dress up and looking great and one that they made look ugly.

The hot girl was helped I think 70% more than the other girl.

Sad, but true.

Sometimes looks do matter, but they don’t make up everything.

When Jesus came back and made his presence known to the disciples, he didn’t have the same appearance that they knew of according to John 21:12…

“Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord.”

They could not tell it was Jesus by the appearance.

How do they know it was Jesus?

Earlier in the chapter, he told them while they were fishing and having no luck to throw the net in on the other side of the boat and they caught 153 fish (An amazing amount) even though they couldn’t catch anything on the other side.

They knew it was Jesus through his actions.

If you looked different would people know it’s you through your actions?

Or would you want to be known for the stuff you do today?

Looks can deceive people into different perceptions about you.

If you look good, you might be favored is what that test above proved.

Can we change perception?

Jesus was known for what he did rather than what he looked like.

We can do the same?

Rather than what you look like, what do you want to be known for in life?

Have a great weekend.
