Sometimes we tend to be long winded.
For the most part in a church I have heard that communion
mediation is supposed to be about three minutes in a church service.
Years ago I served at a church with some great great godly
men, but they would go super long when it came time for this.
I knew one guy usually went super long, I actually counted
how long this would take.
A three minute talk turned into 12 minutes.
I had some friends with me that didn’t usually go to church,
one spoke up and said, “Wow, that was a short sermon.”
When I said that was the communion meditation and not the
sermon, their jaw dropped.
It looked like death came upon them.
Even the best of intentions don’t always turn out so great.
Paul was an amazing servant of God.
As he is going through encouraging and talking to the people
he stops off at Troas.
At Troas he starts to talk and talk and talk.
It’s going on midnight as Paul is still talking.
Eutychus was listening but struggling to stay awake.
Acts 20:9-10…
“Seated in a window was a young man named Eutychus, who was
sinking into a deep sleep as Paul talked on and on. When he was sounds asleep,
he fell to the ground from the third story and was pick up dead. Paul went down, threw himself on the young
man and put his arms around him. “Don’t
be alarmed,” he said. “He’s alive!”
Eutychus wanted to
hear Paul talk but it was a struggle to stay awake.
After falling out the window, Paul went down and brought him
back from the dead.
The people were excited at the end of this section for the
man was dead and now is alive again.
This is always a struggle when getting up to talk.
Is this ok?
Talking beyond the time.
I know some pastors that talk forever.
I knew one guy that’s spiritual gift was not in preaching
and he stated I don’t feel like I get into my sermon until 30 minutes.
This guy’s sermons should have been 15 minutes and even that
was too long.
What’s your take on the length of a sermon, whether you have
been going to church for a week or for 20 years, what do you think?
Paul had the greatest of intentions and I am sure he said
some amazing things.
God does some amazing things and this was an interesting
story about preaching.
I think God can speak through each person but it’s a matter
of setting it up right too.
