There are some places where this saying has some validity, a graduation speech should not be one of them.
I was able to watch some former students graduate earlier this month.
It came time for the main speaker to come up and speak.
It was one of the worst speeches I have ever heard.
The title of this note, is one of the memorable lines from this speech.
I couldn't believe this guy.
The nerve he had to say this as part of a graduation ceremony.
Out of everything you could have said to a graduation class and the family and friends of the graduation class, that was it?
I was very disappointed for the students, that this was their graduation speech.
I wonder if Okemos, Holt and East Lansing had the same type of speech?
For the TH people. This would be like having a speech that basically rips apart North and then having a real speech for the South students.
Shame on you Lansing School District for letting this guy belittle the students of Everett High School, I just hope he didn't do the same speech for Eastern and Sexton.
What do you think?
Is it wrong for me to think there should be higher standards then this?
I don't like when people talk bad about this generation.
As a youth minister and being involved with mostly middle and high school students for almost a decade now, I have witnessed this generation.
There are things I see that I don't like, but I see tremendous potential.
Among those graduating from Everett, there were students going on to Michigan, Michigan State, Stanford (Just to name a few).
There were people that are far more superior intellectually then me.
What is it that you or other people think about this generation that you don't like?
Jesus had some harsh words for the generation of his time.
Some of the Jewish leaders and Pharisees of their time asked Jesus for a miraculous sign.
He gives a couple of different answers.
This is some of his answers in Matthew chapter 12 verses 39, 41-42…
"A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign!
"The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here. The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon's wisdom, and now one greater than Solomon is here."
They wanted a miraculous sign, and did not receive it.
Jesus goes back in time and gives the story of two amazing signs given to the people. When they saw the signs, they repented then, but it didn't stick.
So why would he give this generation a sign?
Would they just turn away afterwards?
The people in Nineveh and the Queen of the South (Bible notes say this is the Queen of Sheba now a country called Yemen) both turned away from their repentance.
Jesus had a right to be mad at this generation.
Do we have that right today?
Right now my life is based on serving this generation.
Showing them love and compassion and hopefully just showing them Jesus.
It's hard to watch as I have heard we have 5,000 middle/high school kids in this area and only 500 claim a Church.
A miraculous sign won't bring people to know of Christ love as Jesus has shown.
We have to do things different to impact this generation and it's more than just saying, "Put a belt on Son, nobody wants to see your Fruit of the Looms."
What do you think?
Have a great day.
P.S. (If I tagged you in this note, I would really like your opinion).
