I never really thought about these two words.
I have heard them.
I have said them.
Yet even though I have heard them and done it so many times, I never thought about what the two words mean.
Talking – to talk or have speech.
Trash – rubbish, waste or pointless ideas.
It's awful.
There is nothing good that is brought from talking trash.
Yet it's so easy for us to do.
We could say it's a sport thing, but it happens in all forms of life…
It happens while, playing sports, hanging out with our friends, at Church, at school, at the mall and everywhere it between.
It's done by parents, kids, grandparents and everyone in-between.
How did we end up like this?
Even a simple conversation can turn into gossip so quick.
It can be the simplest of conversations…
"Did you hear this couple is expecting another baby?"
Rather than saying great or cool we judge right away, "What are they doing having another baby, they aren't even doing a good job with the one they have."
How did this happen?
It's even worse when we kick someone when there down.
Jesus was being crucified.
He was up on the cross and people still talked trash to him.
Mark 15:29-31…
"Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, "So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, come down from the cross and save yourself!" In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. "He saved others," They said, "Bug he can't save himself!"
People were mean, thought little of him, even on his deathbed they made fun of him.
This is the person Christians follow.
If you think faith in Jesus gets easier after making a decision to follow him.
Jesus was ripped on till his last breath, there is nothing that says believing in Christ is easy.
Talking trash was something the non-Christians at that time where doing to the Christian leader.
But we are not supposed to be the one's doing this.
I am just as guilty as anyone else with this.
I have a lot of sarcasm and it's not always a good thing (Imagine that, lol).
How did we get wrapped into this idea that this is a good thing?
Trash talk is almost a way of life right now.
Don Smock, one of our youth staff, mentioned about some people who tried to give up saying negative things for a week.
It took a lot of time and effort, they said the first couple of days, they didn't say much.
It's not easy.
Yet Christians are known as judgmental, critical and very much filled with gossip.
What if we try to do something different?
What if we just tried (No matter what your faith is) to just show love and say encouraging things to one another?
How would that change people?
I am going to try to say only encouraging things today and nothing that is negative.
I am going to try this today and see how it goes.
How about you?
Jesus faced insults it the moment he died, those were done by his enemies, he did that for us.
How did you think he would respond to find out that it's us hurling insults at us.
Christian to Christian.
Family member to family member.
Today can be the start of a change in heart and in attitude.
What do you think?
Have a great day.
