What just happened?

This was an interesting night/morning.

We were rocked by this huge storm.

It was so big it woke me up at 5:30 and I couldn't go back to sleep.

I decided to go to Church and work.

So I drive up to the Church and there are 4 fire trucks.

I'm expecting to see a huge fire at this point.

Nope, the alarm went off.

There is nothing like turning into the Church parking lot and seeing four fire trucks.

They were just checking on the alarm.

So I went moved my car parked and as I was about to go through the second set of doors into the gym, John McGuire looks through the little glass window.

I was freaked out.

If I was more than half awoke I am sure I would have freaked out more.

We talked for a little bit and he went on his way, an interesting morning so far.

An interesting story came up with Jesus and fasting.

John the Baptist disciples and the Pharisees fasted but Jesus disciples did not.

They wondered why this was.

Jesus responded in Matthew 9:15…

"How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast."

I read through this section a couple of times and didn't understand what Jesus was talking about here.

So I looked through four commentaries to give me a perspective.

This really went into a couple of different area's.

The disciples might have been fasting, but Jesus told them to fast in private and not in public so people wouldn't see them fast for show.

The other shows the old and new way.

John's followers were Jews. They practiced all the traditions that the Pharisees followed too.

With Jesus came a new way of doing things, Jesus talks about himself being the bridegroom, that while they are with him you might not see them fast, but when he leaves you will be sure to find them fasting.

Jesus changed the way things were done, he valued spending time eating with sinners rather than following traditions.

When we get wrapped into this idea that Church is a building we go to once a week.

If Jesus had a grave, I am sure he would be turning in it.

Jesus changed the way things were done in the past for a better future.

Some things freak us out, or change the way we do things. Today was an eye opener.

The disciples enjoyed learning from Jesus, they wanted to see change done and Jesus brought them that change.

Jesus created change from the old.

How can you appreciate that changed today?

Have a great day.
