It can be so easy to give your word.
We have many ways to back this up…
- I swear….
- My word is my bond…
- When I say I will be there I will be there…
- I wouldn't let you down.
The list could easily go on.
We want people to believe what we say.
We want to believe we will follow through with our plans.
It's so easy to do the exact opposite.
Jon Kitna, a former Lions quarterback once claimed the team would win 10 games two years in a row.
The Lions might have came a couple of wins short of making 10 wins in those two seasons combined.
I like Jon Kitna as a person and think he is an above average NFL quarterback, but the teams play wasn't able to back up what he said.
It's easy to say I am going to change….
I am going to kick this habit once and for good….
It's often harder to follow through.
Jesus tells the story of two sons (This is just after the chief priests and elders of the people asked Jesus who did his power come from and Jesus wouldn't answer them because they couldn't answer his question).
They were both asked to go and work in the vineyard.
The first declined then later changed and worked in the field.
The second said he would work then never showed up.
He asked which one did what was right.
The people answered the first one.
Jesus replied with this in the end of Matthew 21:31…
"I tell you the truth, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you."
Ouch.
The story hits on the point, prostitutes didn't live for God or for Jesus but they changed and turned to God.
The leaders said they would follow God and never did.
Therefore Jesus hits them hard.
The most hated and despised people were repenting.
They were able to apologize and turn from the wrong they did in their life and turn towards God.
It's easy to follow God with our words, it's hard to follow him with our lives.
It can be so easy to say I have issues, it's even easier to say this and do nothing to change.
We all have weaknesses we each fall short in.
It's easy to say I have problems.
It's hard to say I am going to change.
We all have the ability to change to improve with who we are and who we are trying to be.
Jesus gives us that chance for change.
It takes more than saying it with your mouth.
What do you think?
Have a great day.
