Larger than life
Some things are larger then we can imagine.
There are times in life I am left in awe at what I see or find out.
Sometimes it's a landmark, sometimes it's an amazing shot or a person.
When we are kids we look up a lot.
I loved Michigan State football even at a young age.
My mom and step dad at the time knew of my love.
They surprised me (I don't know how) by having one of my favorite MSU football players at my birthday party.
He was an amazing running back.
I was just in awe that a football player like that was at my house.
I will never forget that.
It was amazing.
Some things are larger than life, but later on we find out truth behind it and it gets smaller.
I found out later on in life the reason why they could get this player at my party was he was on probation and needed to do community service.
I think one of my parents had to pick him up and take him home because he had license issues.
Several years ago while working at the Lansing State Journal I told the story about how my parents got this guy at my birthday party.
They laughed and told me another story about this guy.
They told me about interviewing players in the locker room and over heard him and a couple of players in a discussion about fractions.
My idle was trying to convince the other people that ½ was more than ¾.
After a couple minute discussion one of them finally said, which would you rather have a half a million or $750,000?
He replied that's different, that's money.
Not the brightest crayon in the box.
For years I was in awe of how he was at my party.
It's crazy how things can change.
What was once larger than life, can change as we get older.
They can get smaller (I am still amazed my parents got me an MSU football player at my party)l
Are there things that can get bigger as we get older?
The kingdom of God is one of these.
Jesus tells us this in Luke 13:18…
"What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it to? It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air perched in its branches."
Mustard seeds are a really small seed, yet black mustard seeds could grow to over nine feet tall.
Something that starts so small can be so big.
The kingdom of God can go beyond our own comprehension.
It goes beyond the borders of states, countries and continents.
Faith is grasping something we can't see or always prove.
The kingdom of God is huge.
Yet with how big the kingdom is, God still cares about each and everyone one of us.
It's hard to think someone larger than life cares about me, us.
That just leaves me in awe.
We can't always grasp how big or complex some things are.
I think the kingdom of God is one of those.
I am glad that even with the kingdom so big, God still loves us and cares for us.
How does that make you feel?
